Recently I was talking to a Vampire Count player That had just played a game and his magic had failed him. He required his magic phase to create a lot of models and when it did not then he was helpless. He had spent 1100 on characters and his 1150 remaining was not enough. It seems to me that if he spent 500 pts on characters he could buy 50 skeletons, 10 dogs, and 5 fell bats. As this is more than he can raise this seems like the better buy. When I am looking at an army I often try to look at the opportunity cost of what I could buy for the points spent on characters. Now it may just be my bias but usually the troops you can buy seem better.
