There was a time that the seal of spiel des Jahres meant a game I could not wait to try. They were not always my favorite game but once upon a time all the winners were at least new, innovative and worth playing. Unfortunately that time is past. Zooloretto was the 2007 winner and it was just a repackaging of the game Coloretto. It was neither innovative nor new. Worse yet it seemed geared towards younger children. Now games for 6-8 year olds are fine but they are not ever going to be enough for me to enjoy. Worse yet there were several other games like Notre Dame and Year of the Dragon. Both of these are excellent games which are both innovative and thought provoking. I often wonder if Tikal would make the final cut if it was released this year.
