So you have decided you are going to build an army for Warhammer Fantasy and you have settled on one of the armies.  Well before you start spending money it would be a wise to determine how your army is going to win games.  Basically ther are 4 ways to win games, out magicing your opponent, powerful shooting, superior hand to hand combat, or denying the opponent points.  If magic is the option of choice than a lot of  your points will be spent in characters, but if these fail then you want to have some flexible units which can finish off the opponent's weakened units.  With the shooting army your character points may not be high but after buying shooting units you will have limited points left.  In this case it is also important to buy hard hitting units so that anything which survives the shooting will meet a formitable foe.  The harder list to make is the combat list.  This list need to maximize units for combat.  Thus they will all need full command.  These units should also have ranks and be as large as you can affoard.  Finally they have to be able to either move fast or cove the board.  Finally if avoidance is important than your army needs to have cheap units to redirect enemy units away, or fliers to avoid.  These armies often have some shooting and magic but are trying to win low scoring affairs.  Thus they need to avoid large blocks of troops and maximize movement.  With this choice made it is easier to work out the specic army you want to play and thus you will not waste money on units you will never use.
