In most warhammer games at some time units will get into battle.  So when building an army how so you design your units so they have their best chance to win.  To begin with it is important to look at the combat results table.  This is a series of modifiers which are added to wounds to determine the outcome of the battle and are often called the soft scores.  So to get the most bang for my unit I want to have +3 from ranks so you need to have 4 ranks in your unit.  As a rank has to be 5 models this means 20 models.  With expensive units, like cavalry, this might be too expensive but it would be good.  As you get +1 for a standard this is a necessity.  Further you can get a +1 for have more models and this works well with cheaps units.  Finally if you have an army battle standard in a unit you get one more +1.  This formula works particularly well for infantry and should provide a solid start for any army.
