When deploying my units I divide my units by their roles.  There are main line battle troops, shooters, redirector, and problem solvers.  Ideally I would like to placce a main line battle troop only after the opponent has placed one.  The redirectors are the easiest to lose and so I often place them first.  The shooters are also fairly disposable and so are my second line of placement.  Using these I try to get and idea of where the opponent is going to fight me so I can line up my units.  In most cases if possible they will pick an open field area  and I will then place my units there.  Finally the problem solvers often have a particular problem in mind, like cannons are the problem solver for chariots,  so once the problem is placed the solver can go down.  This gives me a general order for placement which I follow to try to fill the board openings so our units can slug it out.
