Often I find that players lose a game in the deployment phase.  There are often too many factors for a player to consider during the deployment so they "just place down their units".  I am known to play fast but I often pause to consider before I set up as there is a lot to ponder.  Of the many things to keep in mind here are some of the pressing questions which I try to answer.  How will keep the opponet from flanking me?  Where will the battle be fought?  How will I deal with terrain?  How will my opponent try to use the terrain to his advantage?  What match up of units would I like?  What is the best order to force my opponent to make a mistake?    What units of mine must go down after units of his?  This I am sure is only a partial list but answering these should help your game a lot for the very beginning.
