In the perfect game the play would match the theme and not seem arbitrary or forced. That is the case in The Downfall of Pompeii the wonderfully simple game by Mayfaire. In this game there are 2 parts, during the first players grow their population while in the second they try to get as many as posible out of the city. This is done by a clever card play dynamic whereby players use cards to move or place population on the board. Of course eventually the lava flows come and then the players get to move out their pieces and use the lava to block other players. It is a wonderfully fun game with an hour or so of game time and excellent for beginners.
