Recently at tournaments the dominant army type has been point denial. These armies can come in many different shapes and types but they all share one characteristic and that is their stinginess with giving up points. Usually these armies are very character heavy and often have skirmishers or monsters which are very hard to score. These armies tend to lack standards and keep all fighting units to a minimum cost. This allows them to need only a few points to get a win. These armies also try to maximize one part of the game, usually magic or shooting. Besides tournament success these armies are inexpensive to build and thus have appeal to players looking for the best new thing. The advantage of these armies are many as they usually have lots of deployments, are hard to bring into combat, often do not cause panic, and even 3-4 units can be scored without giving up 300pts. This makes them very tough in tournaments. Unfortunately they do not led to fun games. Further they force opponents to play tricks to try to score the expensive characters which can result in wins. Finally it is forcing out other army types at tournaments and is leading to a very monodementional tournaments.
