The new Warhammer Mortals of Chaos book is out for Warhammer fantasy. At 128 pages it is a huge tome by comparison and has a full 85 pages of rules and units. They have raised the price again but only to $25 so it si still reasonable. All these pages are not fluff as there are 7 special units and 6 rare units along with 9 named characters. There are also 3 schools of magic, an almost playable deamon prince, and a pile of gifts of chaos.
Unfortunately when I try to put all these items together I can not seem to get a hard army. Although you can make a whole army immune to fear terror and panic the only way to cause fear is to have trolls, ogres, dragon ogres, giant, or a shaggoth. and the only core units are trolls (if you take the troll king special character). Like most recent books this causes a log jam for the specials and rares. Any way you go they have very expensive troops except marauders so the army is small, and though the characters are HTH beatsticks they seem to have few magical combinations to improve these characters. So you end up with a small pile of uber toughies with some weak humans slowly getting shot and surrounded to death.
Now though this sounds pretty bad it looks like a great list plenty of variety lots of character, and troops oriented. Unfortunately this will match up poorly with the new lists. For example chaos warriors are the same cost as swordmasters, both get 2 attacks and the warriors have a 1 better save. But the swordmasters swing first and leave many fewer left to swing back. You can make them immune to fear terror and panic and they are like the black guard except not stubborn and 33% more. Of course you can put down a lot of units with a few killer units and this will give you a lot of play but when the elite units smack each other they will be a bit over matched. So they will have to be played vary well against the most recent books.
