Ten ways to win a battle

Too often when playing Warhammer I face opponents whose basic idea is to run head long at opponent and hope for the best. This is what I like to call the get em strategy and is a fine example of World War I thinking at its best and we all know how successful that was.
In order to help correct some of these strategy deficiencies I have prepared a list of how to beat a unit.
1 Have better troops. This is the old chaos strategy of get em with chaos knights but it is often better expressed as have your elite greatswordsmen fight the opponent's goblins. This often means setting up and moving so you can fight the opponents better troops and still be able to win somewhere.
2 Flee and Flank. Most charges are made at over half range. Frequently an opponent will not have enough support troops to cover the flanks so they will have to flee as well or be flanked.
3 Circle to a flank. This requires more tactical units as you will move around unit the opponent has to give you a flank or fall for the flee and flank.
4 Pin and flank. This is best done with either unbreakable troops or stubborn troops which will be there in two combat phases.
5 Skirmish line and flank charge. One reason to put skirmishers in the front of your troops is to have them suck up missle fire but they are also useful to take a first charge. Even if they lose a well placed skirmish line will force the opponent to crash into the infantry behind and then be flanked. This works best with troops which do not cause panic in the rest of your army like detachments, slaves, or goblins.
6 Rank and size. Very few battles are won on kills as most come down to combat resolution. Nothings works in combat resolution like having ranks and size. So Big units backed up with some shooting so you will have ranks and size when the troops hit.
7 Turn the front. As troops usually form up to the defender in Warhammer it is possible to turn a unit enough to allow a flank if they can hold the first round. Well placed an opponent may have to charge you whole front as they will be unable to get another unit to guard the flank.
8 Scout the terrain. Even if scouts are not it your army it is often possible to place terrain so the opponent is left with few advancing choices. Hills and woods can be used to put troops in a situation where they can not be charged easily but the opponent can not move by them freely without exposing a flank. This works particularly well with fast cavalry.
9 Hero don't fail me now. Many battle can be won by having an unopposed hero on one side. Usually a hero has 3+ swings so it could be good for two wounds a turn which would usually be enough to swing a battle from a lose to a win.
10 Avoid avoid avoid. Sometime the opponent have built a unit which is so unbeatable that there is nothing you can do but get out of the way. Flee from it and kill the rest of their army as it probably is not very good.
